What is a Web3 Wallet?

5 min

Wallets are your account in Web3

Unlike Web2 apps, there is no username/password combo stored on a company server. A wallet generates a pair of cryptographic keys. Your public address is how you receive tokens and sign in to decentralized apps. Your private key or seed phrase proves ownership, so anyone who has it can move your assets.

Think of the wallet as both your login and your bank account for decentralized apps.

Custodial vs non-custodial (quick guide)

We recommend starting non-custodial so you can collect on-chain achievements, earn rewards, and participate fully in the OpenxAI ecosystem.

 • Custodial wallets (exchanges, some mobile apps) manage keys for you. They feel familiar but you rely on the provider.
 • Non-custodial wallets (Reown, MetaMask, Base Wallet, Binance Web3 Wallet) give you full control. You keep the keys, so you control the funds.
 • You can start with custodial for speed and graduate to non-custodial when you’re ready to self-custody.

Security checklist before you create a wallet

Following these basics keeps you safe when you start experimenting with Base, Binance, or any other chain.

 • Write down your seed phrase on paper — never store it in screenshots or cloud notes.
 • Enable biometric unlock or a strong passcode on your device.
 • Bookmark official links so you don’t fall for phishing sites.
 • Plan where you will back up recovery info (e.g., hardware wallet, password manager).
